Meet Jenna Smith, new mom to her nine month-old boy Connor with husband Paul. They live in Sellwood with their labradoodle Herman.
Why did you decide to raise your family in Sellwood?
My husband and I decided to move to Sellwood because of how family friendly it is! We love all of the nearby parks and the fact that we can walk to restaurants and activities without having to get into the car.
What’s been your favorite family activity in Portland?
Walking around Westmoreland Park and looking at all the birds and animals!
What are your must haves when you leave the house with Connor?
Connor’s warm winter hat, his sunhat (it’s Portland, but you never know) and Sophie the giraffe!
What’s been your favorite “mommy moment” so far?
Taking Connor to the Oregon coast for the first time! It’s a place that is near and dear to my heart and it has been so fun to watch him play and explore.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “me time”?
“Me time” is pretty rare these days, but when it does pop up, I love to curl up and read a book, or go out and explore a new Portland restaurant with my husband.
If you work, what do you do?
I work as a Physician Assistant for a family medicine clinic in Clackamas.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I spent three months backpacking across Europe five years ago!
How do you balance work and mommyhood?
Finding balance is hard, but I’ve found that it’s all about adjusting your expectations and making them realistic. Don’t try to be everywhere at once; focus on the task at hand, be present, take deep breaths and take it one day at a time. And make sure you’re taking care of yourself, because that is important for everyone!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another mom?
To soak in every moment and not take a single day for granted, even during the hardest times. This phase of life goes by so quickly, and I know I will miss it so much. So I try my best to accept the challenges and focus on the many positives!
