Meet Katka Howland, mom to Ella (age 8) and wife to Carter. The Howlands and their dog Lucy live in Eastmoreland where Ella is in the third grade at Duniway Elementary.
Why did you decide to raise your own family in Eastmoreland?
We fell in love with the laid back vibe and the schools!
What’s your favorite family activity in Portland?
Riding our bikes! We love our outings together as a family – to FroYo, the pool, groceries, etc.
What are your must haves when you leave the house with the kids?
Water and snacks – always!
What’s been your favorite “mommy moment” so far?
So many faves! I love cuddles and hearing about her day. Once she said she wanted to be me when she grows up, I cried.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “me time”?
Working out, long walks, happy hour with friends.
If you work, what do you do?
I work for a small business that resells children’s items – Sweetpeas in Sellwood. I love it!
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
Our family immigrated from Slovakia (Czechoslovakia) in 1980. I’m fluent in the language.
How do you balance work & mommyhood?
I’m very lucky to have a flexible schedule. And I swap playdates with several other moms in my neighborhood.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another mom?
Enjoy it, it goes fast. I think about this all the time. I try too fully take in the moments and be as present as possible.
